I live and work as a mosaic artist in the
Haliburton Highlands, three hours north of Toronto in Ontario, Canada.
The scenery is breathtaking, people are friendly and the arts community
is thriving. Creating is easy here: a quick glance through my studio
window offers an abundance of design possibilities.
I chose mosaics as my medium because the
palette is unlimited and the outcome, timeless; and frankly, because
it's a methodical , thoughtful art form which requires my full attention
and discourages multi-tasking! It's both a pleasure and a relief to be
able to work at a pace which actually complements the rhythm of my own
creativity.
I begin with an idea, then select the
materials to be used: ceramic tile, stained glass, broken china, glass
beads, stone, found objects, whatever works. These materials are then
carefully prepared for use as tesserae which are adhered, piece by
piece, to a backing substrate until a form (intended or otherwise)
begins to emerge. Finally, the finished work is grouted and sealed for
protection.
